Chapter Twenty-Two

BROOKE

Camp Joy

Salina, Oklahoma

Day 24

Brooke had just settled into bed with Ethan and the twins when she heard a vehicle approaching. Bolting upright in bed and nearly tossing Ollie onto the floor, she asked, “Did you hear that?”

Ethan lifted Amelia’s leg off his own and rolled toward Brooke. “No, I was sleeping. What was it?” Before she even replied, he had thrown back the sheet and reached for his rifle.

“A vehicle. I swear it sounded like Mad Dog’s Humvee.”

Ethan stood, shouldering his rifle. Amelia whined, rolled over, and placed her legs over Brooke’s.

“Do you hear it, or was I dreaming?”

Ethan moved toward the door. “I hear it.” He eased open the door, coming face to face with Robert. “Someone’s coming down the driveway,” Robert said, shining the light from his rifle onto the floor in front of him.

“I didn’t hear the whistle or any shots,” Ethan said.

A second later, Brooke heard the whistle. She counted the blasts. Two short and one long. Friendlies. All is well!

“Maybe it’s McCrea and company,” Ethan said.

“Let’s not take any chances,” Robert said, moving down the hallway.

Ollie sat up, rubbing his eyes. “What’s wrong, Mommy?”

Amelia groaned her displeasure with the noise and pulled the covers up over her head.

“Nothing, sweetheart. Stay with your sister. Mommy and Daddy are going to have a talk with Pop Pop out in the living room.”

“Did the nice officers come back?”

“Maybe. You stay right here, okay?”

He nodded, and Brooke slid out of bed. She pulled on her pants, grabbed her pistol, and headed for the lodge’s front door just as the Humvee’s headlights came into view.
